You say potato…

Doing a quick shop for snacks last week, for a gaming session, I picked up a multipack of crisps. I wanted plain, and I thought that is what I bought.

As it happens, we didn’t open them, but I just had one as part of my lunch. They were very plain, almost tasteless. On examining the packet, I found they were actually flavoured: “Jacket Potato with Creamy Butter” flavour.

That’s right – potato-flavoured potato crisps. I can’t quite get my head around it; what is more, you will be unsurprised to learn that the “Creamy Butter” component derives its flavour from something other than creamy butter, as the only thing close to dairy in the ingredients is “sour cream powder”.

What next – cocoa flavoured chocolate? An expresso-flavoured latte?

    “Prawn Cocktail” flavour caused me to disbelieve anything their flavours claim. The only one which does taste anything like its name is the paprika (OK, I didn’t try the hedgehog flavour, having never tasted the real thing).

    But making potato flavoured crisps is just weird…

    Oh I dunno… I quite like the idea of “ready salted” without the excessive levels of salt! =:o}

      The problem with these was not related to the salt. I tend to use little salt on my food, and have eaten low-salt crisps before.

      The problem was that they were simply tasteless.
