Kindled

Back in January, I wrote that I had been thinking of getting a Kindle, but had been put off by the relative prices of ebooks to paperbacks.

A couple of things have happened since then to give me a new view on things.

During my trip to California, although I had a couple of paperbacks, I also loaded the Android Kindle application on my HTC Desire, and used it quite happily. Since getting back, I have continued to use the Android Kindle application, and have even bought some more books!

A couple of people have also pointed out that the ebook/paperback comparison might not be totally fair, as ebooks are now often coming out at the same time as hardbacks. Of course, ebooks *are* cheaper than hardbacks, with the advantage that I can read stuff as it is released and not have to wait for the paperback publication. I may even read some Hugo nominees while there is still time to vote!

I have also been directed at the huge amount of free stuff around on project gutenberg and other sites. So now I can re-aquaint myself with the works of Verne, Wells, Dickens and Dumas, which I mostly haven’t read since my teens.

So I have given in, and allowed myself to be Kindled. My Kindle arrived today, and from a short play at lunchtime, I love it already – in particular that I can sync between the device and my Android phone, for times when that is more convenient to take with me.

Janet and I have one each. Fabulous devices. If no one has already pointed you at it then can I recommend checking out the Baen books website, good selection of free stuff as well as loads of purchasable stuff.

Glad you’ve seen the light 😉 I still love my Kindle, best gadget I’ve ever had – no more carting loads of books around from Ireland to the UK and back again, no more filling up the house with paperbacks. I still buy hard copy large format cookery books, but for novels, the Kindle has to be the way to go. How’s your leg now?

Out of curiosity, do you use a cover?

At the moment, I am using the Kindle nude (!), and find it convenient to hold. However, there is a part of me that is saying “it needs protection!”, but I am concerned that if I buy one of the really smart Amazon cases with light, it will turn it into a brick.

At the moment, I am leaning towards a simple silicon-type sleeve, but I will leave buying anything until I have seen (and tried) a few other people’s, I think.

No worries, that’s good data too.
