Packing my bags

Today is my last day at work for a while. I have a busy weekend ahead of me, getting all my clothes and stuff together and packed, and doing my guitar practice; then on Tuesday next week, I fly out to San Francisco for a 3 week holiday.

The trip will include staying with various filkers throughout the California state, attending Consonance, and spending time exploring both Los Angeles and San Franciso.

I’m intending to travel with a minimum of tech – I’ve just been playing with my HTC Desire, and have decided that that is going to be my camera, email and blogging tool, MP3 player, and note-taker for the trip. Also as a GPS, if I can find a map client that will cache my local map tiles, and thus not need a permanent data connection.

Perversely, it is not going to be used as a phone, as the phone account isn’t mine, but work’s, and international roaming is a bitch. I do have a VOIP client installed, so if I have time I am going to see if I can register for a free US telephone number to route through to my SIP account.

Because I am turning off both voice and data plans for my phone, I am going to be reliant upon WiFi, but I think I should be fairly ok there – it is much easier to find than when I was last in the States in 2004.

Intrument wise, I am also travelling light. My tenor uke fits (just!) in my suitcase, and I am borrowing a guitar at the con.

Many thanks to everyone who has made this trip possible – I won’t list them here, but will namecheck them as I blog the trip.

I am really looking forward to this break!

Have a wonderful time! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there two years ago. 🙂 Please say hi to all the lovely West Coast filkers for us!

You *do* know John Denver died in a plane crash?

Adding him to the Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and Big Boppa, already on my MP3 list for the flight.
