David Chaytor jailed for 18 months

So there is justice in the world, after all.

Hopefully the first of many, who fiddled their expenses while supposedly representing us in parliament.

In particular, I liked the part where the judge refused to give him the usual 33% discount on his sentance for “coming clean” and pleading guilty.

“But he would only allow a 25% reduction because Chaytor, who had unsuccessfully argued ancient parliamentary rights should see parliament and not the courts hear his case, had also tried to argue that he could not receive a fair trial in the courts because of damaging press coverage. He had pursued that argument after the supreme court ruled his case was not covered by privilege.”

Shame that the judge still gave him 25% off, and he will probably end up tagged and serving his sentance at home. On the other hand, he is now facing a hefty bill for both the defense and (some of) the prosecution costs.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
