Virtual fun

I am in the midst of moving my various websites from their individual websites, to bring them altogether on a Virtual Private Server.

I’ve been hosting with Xcalibre for several years, and I am not exactly abandoning them – they have sold off their hosting operation to Webfusion, who just happened to have some decent deals on VPS, so I am transferring it all across.

As well as moving the websites, the VPS will also be taking over some tasks that I have had running on machines in my home for years – one of them being the FILK_UK list. At one time, I took some pleasure at having a bank of computers in my office, powered up 24/7, but one of my jobs this year is to move my office into the smaller bedroom, and so I aim to reduce my machines to one desktop, one laptop, and one Linux test server, and all only powered up when in use. Not forgetting my Eee, but that doesn’t live in the office.

Anyway, folk will be pleased to hear that I won’t be moving the FILK_UK list until after the convention in February – although it should be a fairly transparent move, I don’t want to run the risk of messing it up the week before the con!

However, this website *has* moved – from what I can see the DNS change has propagated by now, so hopefully this post will be made on the new site, my LiveJournal link will still work, and nothing will break.

Let’s see, shall we?

I see it on both sites, so it has evidently propagated to here by now.

Hmm, I haven’t looked at their VPS offerings, I shall investigate. (I have a VPS on Hurricane Electric in California, which runs keristor.net, but it’s a little laggy for realtime use.)

It’s something I have wanted to do for some time – move from simply having websites hosted on a shared server, to hosting myself on some kind of dedicated server that I could also run additional stuff on.

At the time, the best Xcalibre could do me was a proper managed server, which at 50 quid a month, I couldn’t really justify. Xcalibre didn’t offer the VPS solution, which is obviously cheaper. The entry level VPS at Webfusion is 20 quid a month, which I am a lot happier with.

For the number of websites I am currently running (4.5 at the moment), it is a bit of an extravagence – essentially it has doubled my hosting costs. However, I can also add any other website that takes my fancy without any additional costs (other than domain registration), plus do stuff like FILK_UK on it, so I think it is worth it.

For my 20 quid, I get 25Gb of disk space, a Gb of RAM (burstable to 2Gb) and unmetered traffic. Ubuntu Linux and Apache. The virtual environment is handled by Parallels, with a Plesk control panel for general setup and administration, which suits me, although you can also simply SSH in and do it the hard way.
