Seed Swap?

My poor garden! I let it go somewhat last year, and I haven’t spent much time out there over the winter. Looking at it today, I realised I need to spend a few days out there, raking the dead stuff up, and generally getting it ready for this year’s sowing.

Yes, it’s coming up to that time again, so is there anyone out there who would like to take part in a little postal seed swap? Due to the (small) size of my little plot, I always end up with more seed of any particular type than I actually need, and on top of that, the two magazines that I enjoy – Kitchen Garden and Grow Your Own – invariably come with a packet or two of seed on the front page.

If you aren’t going to otherwise use them, then I will certainly have them off you.
I have found that out of date seed usually germinates fairly ok, and as I am sowing into trays and pots anyway, before planting out, it doesn’t matter if the yield of viable seeds is less than usual.
Speaking of which, most of my unused seed from last year was in a box in the back of my larder, but I discovered today, that I had mistakenly left a small box of part-opened seed packets on a shelf in my garage.
I didn’t realise I had mice in my garden/garage, but it is clear that I have. Curiously, the tomato and lettuce seed packets were gnawed, but the seeds left alone, but both the spinach and peas were completely shredded, and not one pea survived (lots of skins, but no peas!)

Received your seeds the other day – many thanks.

Basically, I plan to plant double the amount that I need in seed trays, so the fact that some of the packets are a bit old shouldn’t make that much difference.

If nothing germinates, then nothing is lost, but I reckon I should get something.

*raises hand* Me! Our garden is almost certainly even tinier, as it consists entirely of grow-bags and things in pots (the joys of rented accommodation…), so I have the same overabundance-of-particular-seeds problem. 🙂 I don’t have a huge collection of stuff, but it could still be fun to do a swap, even if it’s just for different varieties of the same thing!

Maybe the easiest thing would be to bring seeds along to the con and do a little swap there? 🙂

Great idea. I also have a large supply of little plastic bags (it goes with my boardgame habit), so I will bring a stash to put seeds in.

        Thinks: seeds in baggies.

“No officer, that bag is courgette, and that one is tomato.”
