Iplayer on Wii

Had to get up early today, as I am working onsite today. While getting ready, I noticed my Wii was flashing me, indicating a message.

As I knew full well what that message would be – the long-awaited launch of the Iplayer Channel – I couldn’t resist having a look.

All I can say is “well done, guys”. A full screen Iplayer, without any messing about with zooming in and out to frame it right (which is what you had to do when accessing Iplayer through the Wii Browser). During my very short experiment, the programme streamed without any problems, and the picture and sound quality were more than acceptable – if I didn’t know it was Iplayer, I might have thought I was watching analogue TV.

This is on a 28 inch CRT TV, so if you have a 50 inch HD monster, your mileage may vary. But I think it is fantastic.

Your comments duly passed on to the folks responsible (some of whom sit opposite me).

As for me, I noticed the upgrade very early this morning (actually, we’re a day early), but resisted the temptation. Couldn’t get in the beta test since, as you may have noticed, it required new firmware.

Thanks for mentioning this. I didn’t get it automatically and I might not have gone looking for it if you hadn’t mentioned it.

Looks as good as normal TV so far.

Now all we need is an ITV Channel and a Five Channel.

(C4/E4 repeat their programmes so much, I’ve never found the need for 4OD)
