This is particular relevant to me at the moment, with my current drumming practice.

"Top doctors and brainboxes in America and Argentina believe they may be on the track of pills which could ‘turn down’ people’s ears, protecting their hearing from damage at noisy clubs or concerts."

    My immediate reaction was, as you’d expect, “Oh right, because getting them to play the music slightly less loud would be far too complicated.” Of the few concerts I went to in my youth, approximately all of them were ridiculously over-loud for the room, for the music and for my ears. I don’t suppose that has changed, except possibly for the worse.

    But I can see where it would help drummers, who have to be among their instruments and have to hit the damn things hard.

      Actually, I totally agree with you, and although I am by no means a particularly good drummer, it is totally possible to play the things at an acceptable volume.

      What I do find objectionable is the volumes you often encounter in cinemas these days. It seems it is easier to turn the volume up than persuade some members of the audience to not talk through the show as if they were in their lounge, watching TV.

      Oops sorry, wrong soapbox!

      Yes, surely a more practical and generally beneficial solution would be to produce a pill that, when taken by the acute noise-sufferer, gives them a specific and temporary telepathic ability to influence whoever is at the controls to *turn the bloody thing down a bit!!!* =:o}
