My first attempt at making Ginger Beer worked exceedingly well. After 5 days in the jar, I bottled up a 1 litre plastic lemonade bottle, which left a glassful for tasting – still, but quite pleasant.

After 4 more days, I couldn’t resist any longer, so I opened the bottle. I know I should have left it a couple of days longer, but it was good – effervescent, instead of fizzy, but it definitely had the right taste.

Tonight, I am playing with a new toy, the ProQ Eco Smoker.

This is cold smoking, not hot. The small mazelike device (the ProQ Cold Smoke Generator) is filled with wood dust (“today, I will be mostly using oak”) and set to smoulder with a small tea-light, which is removed once the dust catches. After that, it will produce smoke without heat for up to 10 hours.

I had a good time in Brighton last week, although on my second day there, I slipped in the rain and badly twisted my ankle. However, I spoke to a pharmacist, who suggested I use a diclofenac gel on it; and although it remained swollen and tender, it didn’t stop me getting around.

So the Brighton part of the trip was meeting up with some friends, and 4 days of shopping, eating and cinema. I have already mentioned Apollo 18, which was a disaster. However, I thought Rise of the Planet of the Apes was fun, and I really liked Fright Night (in 3D), featuring David Tennant and Colin Farrell.

As some of you know, I love making stuff in the kitchen, but I always have problems with pastry – apparently I have “warm hands”.

So I think this is a wonderful idea. Ready-baked pastry cases, available by post, in all sorts of varieties – sweet pastry, savoury pastry, choux, tartlets and vol-au-vents.

Doing a quick shop for snacks last week, for a gaming session, I picked up a multipack of crisps. I wanted plain, and I thought that is what I bought.

As it happens, we didn’t open them, but I just had one as part of my lunch. They were very plain, almost tasteless. On examining the packet, I found they were actually flavoured: “Jacket Potato with Creamy Butter” flavour.

The Thermapen is a wonderful gadget. A food thermometer that is easy to use, accurate to within 0.4 degrees C in the range -49 to 200, and 1 degree above that (all thermometers come with an individual certificate of calibration). More importantly, their latest probe – the Superfast – is the fastest food probe I know – measuring the temperature in 3-4 seconds. No more standing around watching the reading rise, and rise, and rise….

Anyway, the UK manufacturer is selling a limited number of refurbished (but otherwise fine) Superfast Thermapens at half price (28.80, instead of 56 quid), on eBay, so I thought I would give people a heads up:

The other day, I was in Asda in Peterborough. I don’t normally shop there, but I happened to be parked in their carpark. Anyway, they had some decent joints of pork shoulder. Whereas my local supermarket tends to only have rolled shoulder, these were the whole joint, with the bone still in – perfect for pulled pork.

It was dirt cheap, so I bought two, on the principle that while I had the Traeger going, I may as well fill the shelf.

Had 4 of my board gaming buddies around today for an all day session of Android. It’s a wonderful but complex game, set in a “Blade Runner” type world. I was providing lunch, but I wanted something that I could prepare in advance, and require a minimum of attention while we were playing.

I read a nice recipe for loin of pork, where it is cooked on a bed of cooking apples, which go to make the sauce. I liked the sound of this, so I looked for a loin yesterday, but they were all quite small. In the end I bought one that might feed a family of 4, so I also bought a tenderloin, which was on offer.

Yesterday was the first time I used my pellet grill to cater for my board-game group. It was the regular “Second Saturday” meet, and we had 11 people attend.

I had planned to do just bangers and burgers, the usual fare, but instead of grilling, I was going to slow cook them on “smoke” setting. This would be a bit different from what I had served before from my Weber kettle, and should also mean that when we broke for lunch, the food would all be ready.

I realised at lunchtime that I had sausagemeat in the fridge that needed to be used up, and I am away for the weekend.

So I thought I would have a try at making a fatty. A fatty is a large sausage-like object, made from sausage or luncheon meat, and smoked. They can be as simple as a log of sausage covered in rub, or wrapped in bacon, or they can have all sorts of fillings.

I may have mentioned, that while I was in San Francisco, I went on a sourdough hunt. I’ve baked my own version of sourdough before, but to have the genuine article would be wonderful.

Was amused to see several large chunks of hand-wrapped parmesan in my supermarket, at half price because they had reached the sell-by date.

On reflection, I wish I had bought more than the one wedge now, as it tastes fantastic, and I’ve just read that it freezes well.
